Product Development of Sea Buckthorn Thomas S.C. Li INTRODUCTION Sea buckthorn ( Hippophae rhamnoides L., Elaeagnaceae) is a hardy, deciduous, dioecious, and usually spinescent shrub (Rousi 1971). It reaches 2–4 m in height in natural habitats and bears yellow or orange-red berries, referred to as “Siberian pineapple” in Russia , because of its taste and juiciness (Abartene and Malakhovskis 1975). The natural habitat of sea buckthorn extends widely in China , Mongolia , Russia , and most parts of Northern Europe . It is a unique and valuable plant currently cultivated in various parts of the world, including Canada (Li and Shroeder 1999).
